Ryo Extended and Dakota Condensed
A set of custom typefaces
TYPOGRAPHY, ILLUSTRATION

Objective
Design a custom and original typeface inspired by personal interests.

I embarked on the challenge to make two typefaces for the logo of my original comic, Ryo and Dakota. I had already designed a logo with a custom logotype, but I wanted to make it my own and have matching usable typefaces to go with it. Ryo Extended is based on a character that has a sharp, unfriendly personality on the surface, and Dakota Condensed is based on a character that has a child-like optimism but is also a bit timid and insecure. Going from here, and inspired by my old logo, I sketched out and rendered each letterform by hand in Adobe Illustrator. I then used FontForger to turn my finished alphabet and punctuation into usable typefaces.
